The 100 Winner

2023 Winning Entry: Dandelion by Ryan Walter

Bending and blowing in the breeze, I struggle to keep my balance on these windy days. Dark approaches earlier and earlier as I watch my vibrant yellow petals fall to the earth. Delicate fuzz replaces my petals, warning me that my time is coming to an end. I recall the balmy days of August, the way the sun touched my petals, giving them their golden hue. An auburn leaf falls beside me, and I realize that I am not the only one changing. While I watch my last pieces of fuzz drift in the wind, I begin to wilt. Peace.
