English Language Arts (ELA)

The English department is committed to supporting Silver Lake Regional High School's Vision of the Graduate, encouraging students to demonstrate respect, leadership, and accountability as they engage in their learning and work to build knowledge. In all required and elective courses, students are encouraged to realize their full potential as individuals, to communicate effectively, to work cooperatively, and to be sensitive to one another. Students are encouraged to study and work effectively in all aspects of the Language Arts: reading, writing, speaking, listening, thinking, viewing, and presenting. Courses in the English department are aligned with the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for English Language Arts and Literacy, which identifies the following key knowledge and academic skills for English Language Arts:

  • Read and comprehend a range of sufficiently complex texts independently.
  • Write effectively when using and/or analyzing sources.
  • Build and present knowledge through research and the integration, comparison, and synthesis of ideas.
  • Use context to determine the meaning of words and phrases.

Students must successfully complete four years of English in order to fulfill the requirements for graduation.
