Silver Lake Reads Summer 2009
The Towns of Halifax, Plympton, Kingston, along with students in the Silver Lake Regional School District will embark on Silver Lake Reads Summer 2009, a reading adventure that will have students and residents of the three communities immersed in shared reading activities revolving around a nautical themed book to be announced soon.
Just to drop a hint, the selected book is an award winner about a well known event in the history of Massachusetts that put ordinary people doing their job in an extraordinary situation at sea.
Summer of 2009 will be filled with book discussions, nautical events and displays at local historical institutions, and library lectures, all happening within the communities of Halifax, Kingston, and Plympton. The Kingston Public Library, Plympton Public Library, and the Holmes Public Library in Halifax will have books available to borrow. A pass to the New Bedford Whaling Museum will also be available at the public libraries for further exploration of the topic. Silver Lake students will arrive back to school and participate in activities centered on their shared reading experience.
Presentations that have been planned so far include a lecture on the Native American influence on the whaling industry that will be hosted by the Holmes Public Library in Halifax. The lecture will be given by Bristol Community College Professor Susan Souza-Mort. Younger readers will enjoy an event at the Plympton Public Library by Mayflower Captain and author Peter Arenstam. A historian from the New Bedford Whaling Museum will do a presentation at the Kingston Public Library. Jones River Landing Heritage Center is in the planning stages of a few events that will tie into this tri-town reading adventure.
Local cable will soon feature public service announcements created by senior English classes at Silver Lake Regional High School who will be reading the book in advance of the summer to help with the promotion throughout the communities.
The selected book for Silver Lake Reads Summer 2009 will be a requirement for high school students. This will be the third year that the high school has done a “One School, One Book” shared summer reading experience. Middle School students will still have an opportunity to select a required summer reading book as part of the “Your Summer, Your Choice” program that the middle school has sponsored for the last two summers. Students will choose from eighteen titles that have been nominated by students. There will be a middle school bonus book selection that fits into the nautical theme of Silver Lake Reads Summer 2009. Residents will also be treated to an exhibit of nautical works of art that the middle school students will be creating and will be out on display.
Area book discussion groups, restaurants, and businesses that would like to get involved are encouraged to contact their local library or Linda Redding , Nicole Afanasiw, or Vicki Wright in the Silver Lake Regional School District.
