Summer Reading 2009 ~ “One School, One Book”

Greetings AP/ Honors English Student:

In addition to having a safe and enjoyable summer, you are expected to complete the following Summer Reading Assignment in response to our “One School, One Book” Summer Reading title: Nathaniel Philbrick’s New York Times Best-Seller and National Book Award-Winner In The Heart of the Sea. It is expected that you bring your completed Dialectical Journal to your first English class. Should you have any questions, you may contact Mrs. Afanasiw, the ELA Coordinator at: nafanasiw@slrsd.org.

Your Assignment: Select six noteworthy passages from the book to explore in greater detail as a Dialectical Journal. Selected passages may run one to several sentences in length.

Here’s the format for your Dialectical Journal entries:
            a. Divide your page(s) into two columns.
            b. Type the entries, using Arial font size 10.
c. In the left-hand column, please type your 6 key passages (with page numbers cited in parenthesis after the quotation).
d. In the corresponding right-hand column, write a one-paragraph reflection on the significance of each passage selected (avoid plot summary). Here are some ideas to consider for your reflection/ reaction column:

  1. Ask questions you would like to pose to the author (he will be visiting SLRHS in September) or to one of the people in the story.
  2. React to the passage – what makes it so striking/ noteworthy?
  3. Make connections between the passage and whatever it reminds you of from some previous reading, viewing or living experience.
  4. Pose alternatives or counterarguments to the passage you have chosen.
  5. Make a prediction of what may happen next.
  6. Express the relationship of this passage to the meaning of the story as a whole.
  7. Analyze the writer’s style and his skillful use of literary techniques in the passage.

This one-paragraph reflection should present a fluid and thoughtful response to the reading. Remember: analyze, don’t summarize!

It goes without saying that your work must be your own. This is an independent reading and reflection assignment. Reliance on outside sources without proper documentation (including web-based book notes) or your peers will result in a failing grade. Academic integrity matters.

***** Be on the lookout for announcements detailing special pricing on the book here at school as well as discounts at Borders in Kingston. The Halifax, Plympton and Kingston libraries will stock extra copies as well!
