The Crisis Prevention Institute’s Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Instructor Certification Program strives to balance practical applications and humanistic concerns. The program begins by clarifying basic elements of violent behavior. It proceeds to identify how a crisis may escalate, and conversely, de-escalate. Finally, it helps identify strategies that have proven successful for thousands of human service personnel throughout the world. But most importantly, it allows the Certified Instructor to use him/her personal skills and experience in presenting the program, and to modify him/her presentation according to him/her facility’s needs. This publication is a teaching manual - not a script. Crisis intervention is a small segment of time in which staff members must intervene with another person to address behavior that may escalate into disruptive or even violent incidents. The goal of staff is to intervene in a way that provides for the care, welfare, safety and security of all who are involved in a crisis situation. |
